I’m H. Pylori Free!

4 Apr

This post is a little different.  I wanted to touch on something that is very important to me and probably to thousands of others out there – how do I get rid of a Helicobacter Pylori infection without the use of antibiotics?  Well, let’s back up a bit.  I started having digestive issues after a severe bout of food poisoning after consuming a bowl of macaroni and cheese at one of my favorite restaurants about three years ago.  Oh how I wish that I could go back in time and order something else but I will say that the experience has given me a new appreciation for alternative forms of medicine.  I did start having noticeable symptoms about 6 months after the initial food poisoning and then in September 2009 my health took a dramatic turn for the worse.  I was waiting for my husband in the waiting room at the dentist’s office when all of a sudden I thought I was going to die!  I got extremely dizzy, everything went hazy, and my hands began to shake.  I was for sure that I was going to pass out but the only thing I could think of at the time was keeping my cool (I didn’t want to make a fool of myself in front of anyone!).  I started instinctively doing deep breathing exercises and within a few seconds the dizziness subsided.  I was still severely shaken up but seriously worried about what had just happened to me.  Once we were home I immediately started researching my symptoms – panic attack.  Whaaahhhtt?  I have absolutely nothing to panic about so it of course worried me that maybe I was becoming mental or something.  Unfortunately the anxiety never let up for about two years, during which time I visited doctor after doctor with no clear diagnosis.  I was handed antidepressants and street drugs (aka Xanax) to cope.  I knew something was wrong but why couldn’t anybody tell me what was going on??!!  It wasn’t until I visited an extremely knowledgeable integrative physician (an M.D. with extra training in alternative therapies) that I finally got the pieces to fit together.  I mentioned to her at one appointment that I felt better after eating, so off I went to be stabbed with needles for 5 hours for a glucose tolerance test.  I thought it was a little pointless but did it anyways.  I thought it was kinda dumb that I had to stay at the hospital for 5 hours and it was definitely the longest anxiety-ridden experience I have ever had.  But guess what…at hour three I experienced one of the worst hypoglycemic attacks I have ever had.  I started bawling and became very confused.  Thankfully, my wonderful husband was by my side telling me it was going to be ok.  Sure enough, my body recovered to normal levels by hour five.

What does all this have to do with h. pylori?  Well, I have learned that all of our systems are delicately balanced with one another and if one system is struggling, it’s very likely that another is too.  Long story short, I ended up at the gastroenterologist again, this time with a different doctor (don’t even get me started on the first one), and he decided, no wait, I DECIDED to ask for Rifaximin (an antibiotic for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) because I was having some horrible – put a beach-ball under your shirt – kinda bloating, gas that could clear a room (I know, I know, not very lady-like but considering the subject, I’m not holding back), nausea, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, and generally just feeling like CRAP!  I went on the antibiotic and I pretty much felt like Superman.  I was on top of the world!  And the strangest of all, my hypoglycemia got infinitely better.  Weird.  But important because now I had a link to all my symptoms.  It was also the first time that I realized our bodies cannot function properly with our digestive systems out of whack.  I ended up going on the Rifaximin another time before, you guessed it, seeing yet another gastroenterologist.  I currently still work with the same one because he really is knowledgeable about small bowel disorders and was the one who found the stupid little bugs clinging to life in my stomach.  The second step was getting a stool analysis to confirm the positive serum antibody test.  No surprise, it was positive.  I declined the use of antibiotics and decided to give it a go with natural supplements and diet before considering going the conventional route.

Ok, so what are all of my symptoms?  I’m not sure all of them can be attributed to the h. pylori but it certainly wasn’t making things any easier:

Anxiety (I no longer have it but it pretty much dissipated once I got on treatment for my hypoglycemia and digestive issues)
Fatigue/lethargy – some days I would roll from the bed to the couch and stay there pretty much all day
Brain fog
Shortness of breath
Lack of concentration
Recall memory problems
Bloating
Nausea
Gas
Diarrhea
Some acid reflux (didn’t occur until I started the treatment – weird)
Heart palpitations
Lowered blood pressure
Weight gain – oh goody!
Heat intolerance

Now for the nitty gritty.  How do you get rid of it?

Disclaimer: I am not a medical doctor but I chose these supplements based upon my own research.  I also used all these supplements for 60 days and had another stool antigen test done and it was NEGATIVE.  That’s right, I got rid of it with this protocol.

That dude was pretty smart.  And completely right.

Diet:  The best would be to avoid grains altogether (all grains provide carbohydrates that break down into sugar which subsequently feed the bacteria); however, at the very least, DO NOT eat white flour products such as white flour, potatoes, sugar, rice, tapioca etc.  Eat lots of vegetables, squash, fruit, nuts, seeds, and protein such as chicken, beef, fish, pork etc.  Pay attention to packaged foods and canned foods that may have hidden sugars such as high fructose corn syrup, glucose, sugar, brown sugar, and molasses.  You may use stevia powder/liquid (can find at health food stores) or honey to sweeten foods.  I know this sounds restrictive but it’s only until the h. pylori is eradicated; you can slowly add foods back into your diet as you can tolerate them.  Keep in mind that after the bacteria is gone, it may take several months for any inflammation or gastritis that the bacteria caused to clear up.

Supplements:  I chose the set of supplements that I am taking based on research with clinical trials that studied in vitro (in a lab) and in vivo (in a human) results and whether or not an herb or supplement inhibited the growth of h. pylori or killed the h. pylori.

·         Monolaurin: Derived from coconut oil (coconut oil is by weight 50% lauric acid – the main constituent of Monolaurin) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16010969 *Whatever supplements you choose to use, if I can make one recommendation, it would be to take Monolaurin (2 capsules, 2 times a day).   I also take 3 tablespoons of coconut oil daily to receive more of the benefits of lauric acid but it’s also great for your skin and hair

·         Mastic Gum: Inhibits and kills h. pylori bacteria.  Mastic Gum is great for ulcers too.  You can use just the single supplement or use a product called Pyloricil by Ortho Molecular Products that includes zinc (great for immune function), berberine, bismuth, and mastic gum.  I chose to use Pyloricil because of the studies behind zinc, mastic, and bismuth in eradicating h. pylori…but this is all up to personal preference because most people just use the mastic and have great results.  The Pyloricil is an expensive supplement too, so that may deter some people.

·         Vitamin C: I take 3 grams of vitamin C a day…it’s great for the immune system but also is an acid, so it does have some effect against any bacteria.

·         Broccoli Sprouts:  Sulforaphane (the active part of broccoli sprouts has been shown to inhibit and kill h. pylori and protect the stomach against inflammation and ulcers. Read this: http://www.pnas.org/content/99/11/7610.abstract.  I used New Chapters Broccolive and continue to use it for the positive antioxidant protection.

·         Oregano Oil: Great for digestion and it has antibiotic properties against h. pylori.  Read this: http://www.dynamicchiropractic.com/mpacms/dc/article.php?id=50197

·         Turmeric: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12553052 – I’ve seen a lot of research about Turmeric and plan to use it even after eradication of h. pylori.

·         L. Glutamine:  This amino acid heals any inflammation or damage caused by the bacteria. http://www.bidmc.org/News/InResearch/2009/May/StomachUlcers.aspx– I like to put the powder over my eggs or fruit in the morning.  This is also a great supplement to use if you are weight lifting or struggling with intestinal permeability.

·         Candex: These are enzymes that will help digest the biofilms that form over h. pylori preventing antibiotics or herbal formulas from eradicating the bacteria.  There has been a lot of research about biofilms and there is compelling evidence that they have contributed to antibiotic resistance and hard to eradicate strains of h. pylori.  I used two capsules, twice daily about 30 minutes before each meal.

·         Lactoferrin:  Helps modulate iron absorption during infection or inflammation.  Lactoferrin also acts to “mop up” any iron that may have been used in the creation of biofilms.   http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/14682/Lactoferrin

·         Digestive Enzymes:  The digestive system is probably not working as it should with h. pylori and it’s probably a good idea to help it digest each meal by adding 1 capsule with your meals.

·         VSL#3 Probiotics: I have seen a lot of research about this particular probiotic and I am impressed by the strains used and the amount that you get in each packet: 450 billion!  It is a medical probiotic and is rather expensive but I seem to respond to it the best – and believe me – I have tried several different brands.  You can either order it online (it’s shipped in a cold container) or you can find it at well-known pharmacy’s…just go to www.vsl3.com, go to the order page and then open up the pharmacy locator.  It will be refrigerated behind the pharmacy counter, not on the shelf.  You will need to call the pharmacy to make sure they have the right probiotic available (there are VSL probiotics available that require a doctor’s prescription).  Keep in mind that when you order VSL#3 it is $89 for a 30 day supply (it may be cheaper if you buy it at the pharmacy), so you may consider just making your own yogurt or drinking Kefir to avoid the costs of this particular probiotic.

*I will mention that I did use Manuka Honey for about two weeks when starting my regimen but I honestly couldn’t find any compelling solid evidence that it could work for h. pylori or any other intestinal bacteria.  I know that some people have cured their h. pylori with it, and I am not going to discount that it may work for some people, but I wasn’t willing to spend more money on a product that may or may not work.  However, I will say that Manuka Honey is stellar when it comes to healing wounds and some hospitals have started to take note of its healing properties.

My hope is that this post can help someone as much as it did for me.  Unfortunately, I’m still struggling with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) but I see the light at the end of the tunnel.  I am on another regimen for that and working closely with my doctor to monitor my progress.  Once I feel that the SIBO is under control, I will definitely post about that too.  I will close by saying that any supplement, whether it be for adrenal, thyroid, hormonal, digestive, heart health, or other chronic conditions, make sure to get tested and see where your body is struggling.  The worst thing we can do is start guessing and thinking that our symptoms match one condition when it really can be another that is causing your problems.  Keep in mind that symptoms can overlap and imitate one another, so order the tests yourself, or even better, find a doctor who is willing to work with you (I know this is almost impossible) so you can be on the right road to recovery.

Here’s to being H. Pylori free!

Hi, thanks for the info. Your information, along with a few different blogs seems to coincide with a cure that has work for some people. Really good stuff, thank you.
May I ask following your erradication of H Pylori what were your follow-up symtoms for SIBO? The reason I ask is I’m currently following a similar protocol that I’ve seen at both
    http://amyking.wordpress.com/2009/02/20/im-so-happy-i-have-h-pylori/ and also
    and
    http://www.advancedhealing.com/blog/2009/09/13/heartburn-gastritis-gerd-achlorhydria-h-pylori-treatment/
I’m having some success so far 🙂
The reason I ask is that I think that I may also have SIBO as well.

      Kevin,
I’m glad that you have decided to go the natural route to erradicating H.Pylori! I too did extensive research, relying heavily on Amy Kings article as well as a few others, and ultimately developed my own protocol based on what research I found. I know that I had SIBO (or some type of pathogenic overgrowth) prior to my H.Pylori being diagnosed because I responded almost miraculously to antibiotics. It wasn’t a cure but it certainly pointed me in the right direction. I will say that once my H.Pylori was gone, that my anxiety completely went away. Unfortunately, I still had bloating, nausea, fatigue, foggy brain etc., so I knew that I still had more going on. I’m currently working with an integrative medical doctor who has really been wonderful and pointed to the fact that I may have leaky gut (or increased intestinal permeability) from all the infections being present for so long. Leaky gut does carry with it a laundry list of symptoms, so it certainly could explain my lingering symptoms after gettting rid of the H.Pylori. Also, I will mention that through various research, a lot of individuals with SIBO cannot tolerate probiotics at all. I found that I couldn’t tolerate them at all before getting rid of the H.Pylori. It could have been because of the H.Pylori or because the protocol I was on likely created a clean slate in my gut so that the probiotics had room to proliferate. After I started high doses of probiotics, all my brain fog and a lot of my fatigue vanished. I’m still having digestive issues, so the next step for me is figuring out what’s going on with a Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis from Genova Diagnostics. Hopefully that will clear up any confusion about what’s going on now but I’m so happy that I got rid of the H.Pylori and can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope that answers your question and thanks for reading!

Thank you for your reply.. congratulation for persisting to find a cure. I used to have very bad anixiety too and that has mostly disapeared for me now, I dont have brain fog very often now, but I do if I eat poorly. I believe I have a cleared my H Pylori a few times only for it to return. I’m sure you know that if the digestion isnt working it’ll come back unless measures are taken (We got h pylori as we created the ideal enviroment for them to live in). Getting digestion working again following treating is the important to stop the buggers from coming back. I’m going to focus on improving my acid production following getting rid of HP. This can be done manually by supplementing with HCI tabs but I’ve heard on the Life Enthusiast podcast that you can improved this by taking himalayan salt (a pinch in the morning). Hydrochloric acid is made from Hydrogen and Chloride, you get hydrogen from water and chloride from sodium chloride (Salt) but good quality salt obviously. :). Also Iodine is important. Good quality kelp is a great source (Norwegian kelp). Also magnesium. I take a pinch of epson salt before eating as it helps the liver and kidneys work more effectively. Epson salt also relaxes the bile duct so it allows more bile to flow improving digestion further and soothing the digestive track.
There is an alkalizing/digestion protocol that works very effectively at sicknesshope.com. You need to sign in. Look at the testimonials! The website is run by someone called moreless. He’s got a bit of strange way about getting the point across but the information is very effection. I can vouch and it’s free! I folllowed an adhoc protocol a few years ago which I felt amazing on. Because I felt so good I resumed to my old ways and my health deteriated. I’m trying to backtrace what worked. Thanks again for your reply.

hi i have the pylori too i been treated with 2 rounds of antibiotics but didn’t work it, i will see a gastroenterology in 2 week but i already started my natural treatment with brocoli sprouts capsules, garlic, ginger and probiotics. i want to know if the insure cover the probiotics that you are recommend
i love your post thank you for share

      • Grain Free and Fabulous February 2, 2014 at 11:18 pm #

As far as the probiotics that I recommend, they are generally not covered by insurance unless you can get a doctor to prescribe the stronger version. Hope you get well soon!

The only supplement proven to heal your stomach lining and kill h pylori is colostrum. I have tried a bunch of supplements mentioned above they help but couldn’t do much. Try COLOSTRUM you will see by yourself.

  2. caroline July 8, 2012 at 12:14 pm #

Thanks so much for sharing all your research and your treatment plan. I’ve been treated for H. Pylori twice with quadruple therapy, to no avail. Due to having several drug allergies and having been treated with lots of antibiotics since childhood for recurring infections, I believe that mine is a drug-resistant variety and no antibiotics that I can take will touch it.

My gastro doc believes that I’ve probably had this infection since childhood, and if that’s the case, I’ve lived fairly comfortably with it until last year, when a prescription for cortisone caused acute gastritis. That’s, in fact, what eventually led to my gastric biopsy and diagnosis. And although my treatments did make me feel better while I was taking them, I never fully recovered and my stomach symptoms eventually flared up again — although not to the level I experienced during that acute flare-up — and I haven’t ever gotten back to that pre-cortisone state of occasional flare-ups every couple of years or so.

At this point, I’m ready to try anything to get rid of the constant fire in my stomach. So I’m happy to know that you and others have found non-antibiotic methods, not just for treating the symptoms of this awful infection, but for actually getting rid of it. Can’t wait to give these things a shot.

Not being a regular user of herbs and supplements, I’m having some trouble determining which brands are of good quality. Would you mind listing the brands of vitamins that you’ve taken? Not as an endorsement, necessarily, but just as a starting guide? Thanks again for your research!

I’m glad that you are going to undertake a natural approach to H. Pylori. I was very hesitant to try antibiotics because I was pretty sure they were the exact thing that caused most of my problems in the first place. My gastro did hand me a prescription for triple therapy, but I decided to try the natural route first and see what happened – and I’m glad that I did. Here’s the brands that I used (I followed the directions on each bottle or I put how much I took in the actual article above):

      Monolaurin by Ecological Formulas
Pyloricil by Ortho Molecular Products (or Mastic Gum Extract by Source Naturals)
      Vitamin C by Nature’s Way (1000 mg)
      New Chapters Broccolive
      Oregano Oil by Gaia
      Turmeric by New Chapter
      L. Glutamine by Jarrow brands (500 mg)
Candex (that’s the actual brand name)
Omega-Zyme digestive enzymes by Garden of Life (If you use this digestive enzyme, you do not need to use Candex – it’s one or the other)
VSL #3 Probiotics (flavored or unflavored) – I used 1 packet a day

Hope this helps you out! Also, you can adjust each dosage to you and find what works best. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. I started my supplement/diet regimen yesterday — fingers crossed!

i have to tell you, the list of supplements is overwhelming… Last year my h pylori was cured with gastro mend(google it) $40 for 1 month supply-it was gone with two rounds. It’s expensive but worth it! also, manuka honey definitely helps tip you get the gastro mend.

    • Larissa Ervin May 2, 2014 at 1:47 pm #

Hi Caroline! My name is Larissa, and i also have been diagnosed with H pylori. I have been struggling with it for a LONG time. I am taking many of the supplements she listed above and I also take this stuff called GREENS. It does wonders! It gives you natural energy, fights infection and bacteria, helps your digestive system, boosts your immune system, It contains tons of natural supplements and has 8 servings of fruits and vegetables and 38 super foods. It balances, detoxifies, and alkalizes your body. I hope you find this helpful!

this is awesome information. Glad you are recovered from this nasty little bug. I have the same exact symptoms as you! I didn’t know heat intolerance was connected to h pylori but I have that as do you. did that go away once the gut was healed?? Hope to hear from you soon. God Bless!

    • Grain Free and Fabulous December 5, 2012 at 12:59 pm #

Thanks for reading my story! I think there can be multiple symptoms of H.Pylori, as any infection of the GI tract can wreak havoc on the way we feel. I definitely felt better after getting rid of the H.Pylori but I also tested positive for 6 other strains of bacteria that decided to set up shop in my intestines. I have been feeling better and better once I started attacking the extra bacterial strains. I’m still trying to figure out what caused all the infections but I truly believe low stomach acid is to blame. I hope that you are able to get rid of the H.Pylori and start feeling better! It’s a horrible little bug…

  4. Haplo908 December 24, 2012 at 2:38 pm #

Hi i’m from Mexico and i’ve been reading your article and it was exactly like my case, i still remember the food that made me sick and started all the symptoms of H. pilory, that was 5 years ago, i went to the doctors and they said that i had IBS, but something always told me that i didn`t have that because the antibiotics made me feel almost normal the first time i tried (5 years ago and it was only amoxicilin) like i was cured, but the pain and discomfort came back.
A month ago i tried the first round of antibiotics (pylopac) and i feel a lot better now but i still have gastritis issues, im going to get a breath test in a few weeks, if it fails i’ll try your diet and supplements and I hope to find those in Mexico. Sorry for my english i wasn`t sure to post but this is very important to me like you mentioned in your post.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous January 26, 2013 at 5:06 pm #

Thank you for reading my post and I hope you were able to get rid of your H.Pylori! It can be a stubborn bug for some people but hang in there, it can be gotten rid of permanently!

    • Kat September 10, 2014 at 4:18 pm #

Hello, I know it’s been a couple of years since your posting, but I was wondering if you got rid of your HP? I am also in Mexico, and I have been treated for it twice–the second time with 2 weeks of the PyloPac plus Zinc Carnosine, back in 2012. I thought I was cured but now I am having the familiar symptoms again. Do you know if there is anyone in Mexico who can test for HP using the breath test? I dread another endoscopy.
      Thank you, Kat

      • Grain Free and Fabulous February 20, 2015 at 8:59 pm #

Yes, I don’t check this blog often but keep it up to help people. I did get rid of my H.Pylori and I still do not have it to this day. I unfortunately do not know of anyone in Mexico who can test using a breath test. Have you requested a stool test through your physician? That would be a good way to go if you are unable to find someone who can administer a breath test.

Hi i had the bacteria 2months ago, the antibiotics made me worse, i lost so much weight because i lost my appetiite! The anxiety was bad i thought i was dying of an illness and doctors kept saying its yr anxiety!! I new there was something wrong! I think its gone havent had the breath test done cause finishing
My probiotics! Just want to no wen the anxiety goes i have never suffered anxiety and its driving me crazy i still think there is something wrong with me, ive had blood tests done and my doc says im in good healh!! Any vitamins out there for anxiety?? Thanks 😉

    • Grain Free and Fabulous January 26, 2013 at 4:59 pm #

Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner but my anxiety did get a lot better once the H.Pylori was gone. Unfortunatley, I did discover some food intolerances that could be contributing to my continued digestive symptoms, but am hopeful for a full recovery. There are vitamins for anxiety but they won’t fully cure the problem if there is an underlying infection or other physiological issue causing your anxiety. Hang in there! It does get better!

This is very helpful! Thank you for sharing . I have some questions.
    1. Which digestive enzymes are best if I have h. Pylori ?
    2. My body is hypersensitive to most supplements, herbs, foods. I have an allergic reaction. So I don’t know how I can take these supplants.
3 Did you have a lot of allergies before you started your refining? And now?
    Thank you

    • Grain Free and Fabulous February 10, 2013 at 11:41 am #

Thanks for reading my post, I hope it can help you! As for digestive enzymes, my personal opinion is using a complex enzyme supplement that includes several enzymes; I’ve used Garden of Life O-Zymes and the Jarrow branded one. There are several brands out there offering complex enzymes at different price points, so be sure to look around. I’m not a doctor but if you have a known allergic reaction to some or all of the ingredients listed in the supplements I recommend, then by all means, do not use them. I do recommend, however, that you seek guidance from a naturopathic doctor or an integrative physician, as they would be able to possibly help you find supplements you can tolerate to erradicate your H. Pylori. I did not have very many hypersensitivites to herbs or foods before starting my regimen, so I apologize that I can’t really help in that regard. But please seek a natural minded practitioner to help you with your hypersensitivities – they may be able to get rid of them or at least lessen their impact.

Is oil of oregano good at getting rid of parasites? Im h pylori free but still have anxiety which i never had before getting that nasty bacteria! Im going to a parasite cleanse aswell called tri plex, hope it works.

  7. Grain Free and Fabulous February 11, 2013 at 2:10 pm #

I have read that oil of oregano is good at getting rid of parasites. If you are still suffering with anxiety, I suggest you get a comprehensive diagnostic stool panel from Genova Diagnostics. That way you can see what else is going on with your digestion and other bad bacteria/parasites that may be causing your symptoms. I had one done last year and I’m so glad that I did – it revealed many things and was worth the price. I also suggest, if you’re not already doing so, find a naturopathic doctor who can help you with this/interpret results and give you suggestions on what to do next after you have a better picture of your digestive health. Hang in there! It does get better!

  8. amaru laiqa February 14, 2013 at 3:21 pm #

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this. I have also read Amy Kings blog and found it very helpful. I have been dealing with a Pylori infection for about 8 months now. I lost three different jobs, my wife and am soon to loose my house. I’m in the process of going to therapy in order to deal with all of this. I have been on the Monolaurin, Mastic Gum and Manuka Honey for the past 7 days and I can feel a big difference. You mentioned no carbs. I’m eating organic chicken soup with veggies brown rice and sweet potatoes. May I ask what you diet consisted of exactly. I’m a bit concerned due to the fact that I have lost a significant amount of weight already and if I cut out the breon rice I’m afraid I’ll loose more weight.

  9. Jenny February 23, 2013 at 3:17 am #

Wow, I received my stool results from Genova Diagnostics last month! After a bad bout of gastro/food poisoning 5 years ago I was left with terrible food intolerances and lost so much weight I thought I was going to die. I also got arthritis and have terrible indigestion. No medical specialist could treat me, or believed there was a link between the gastro and the arthritis/food intolerances. I eventually learned by myself what I could and could not eat and began to put on weight again. Filtered water was also a great turning point for me. However after the arthritis spread and became crippling last December I have found a naturopath who thinks they’re all linked. I’ve also had anxiety for years btw. My stool test results were positive for H Pylori, as well as a parasite and a yeast/mold (not candida). I was also extensively blood tested for food intolerances, of which I had several. I’m now on a natural treatment for the H Pylori and bugs and will be re-treated in a fortnight. So far the brain fog/fatigue has gone (was so used to having it, didn’t even notice I had it until it was gone!) but all other symptoms are still there. If all the bugs are fully eradicated she will get me on supplements to heal the damage caused by them. Fingers crossed for us all on this journey!!

  10. Yolee February 24, 2013 at 9:59 pm #

Hi thanks for sharing your story! I have been on lauricidin (same as monolaurin) mastic gum, bio hpf and vsl3 along with the no carb, no sugar, no dairy and gluten free diet now since Jan 15th. My symptoms were different than yours I had stomach pain no appetite, no energy, acid reflux and chest pain. I got diagnosed in June 2012 and did the horrible antibiotic treatment and thought I was going to die but now I’m trying the natural approach. I struggle with the diet because I’m kind of a picky eater not too keen on trying new things but I was wondering if you know about things like salt and season salt (with no sugar of course), most of my symptoms have gone away except the chest pain and some acid reflux but I thought I would be almost done with it all by now but I still have no energy and the chest pain its not nearly as bad now but its still there so I can’t help but think I’m doing something wrong with the diet….. I look at all labels. I eat lots of fruit mainly strawberries, cantelope, grapes, apples vegetables broccoli, culiflower, carrots, spaghetti squash, zuchini and chicken (free range organic) fish and occasional beef. It just seems like I’m never going to get better. I am seeing a homeopathy Dr now and just had my consultation last week and I’m doing the stool test also from genova diagnostics and I go back this week to see what she suggests so I hope she can help me more but any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Are you feeling better now? Are you able to eat what you want now?

  11. Yolee February 25, 2013 at 12:49 pm #

One more question, how long did you do the treatment for?
    Thanks

  12. Yolee February 25, 2013 at 3:45 pm #

Hi I realize I haven’t even given you a chance to respond to my other comments but I keep coming up with more questions. I’m sorry I should have tried to put it all in one comment.
You said either use the candex or the omega zyme which one do you think is better for eradicating the hpylori and bio films? How much of the oil of oregano did you take daily?

  13. Yolee February 25, 2013 at 3:57 pm #

I’m so sorry one more thing. How much of the pyloricil did you use daily? I think I may switch from the mastic to pyloricil.

I was told after many hospitalizations ,cat scans, etc.that i had I.B.S. and put on several other medications to no relief since last summer.Recently found out I had breast cancer, went threw a double masectomy, and the cancer pill caused me so much stomach pain i was not able to continue with it.5 years ago i thought i was having a heart attack and went to the e.r.i had been suffering with burning pain in my stomach, but was put on nexium,as many of you i was only getting worse.that was when i found out that i had h-pylori,they treated me ,but i dont believe it ever really went away.I am waiting for my stool test to come back,my stomach is full of poloyps, also have been on a lot of pain med’s. It dawned on me the other nite that maybe it was not i.b.s.as i have only been getting sicker,so I decided to goggle h-pylori and was AMAZED with all the stories of people who have been wrongly treated!! I am sick to death of anti biotics. But I think its only made me worse. & I thank you for all the infromation that you have taken the time to put on this site. I am in the process of trying to find some of thee ingredents. I live in Maine & Can not find thee mastic gum, Or thee monmolaurin do you know where I can get these as I dessprately need them. Thank you. P Huston.

  15. Shannon March 11, 2013 at 7:10 pm #

Did you have a blood or breath test to determine if it was in fact H. pylori? Also how long did you use the supplements/diet for before you felt better? I have been having horrible stomach burning, pain, tightness and bloating, it moves around from upper, to lower, left to right. Also horrible nausea, dizziness and anxiety. Does this sound like what you experienced? I had a blood test for h.pylori but it came back negative. I already follow a gluten free, dairy free diet so i’m at a loss as to what to do about this. I tried a whole jar of manuka honey over 2 weeks with no improvement.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 2:06 pm #

Sorry for the late reply Shannon! I actually have done both tests; however, blood antibodies is only reliable for initial diagnoses, not for repeat testing as the antibodies tend to stick around in the blood, even after eradication. I used the supplements for a few months, but continued the probiotics and plant based diet for a few more months before my digestion really felt better. As you experienced several symptoms with a negative blood test, I would suggest finding a practitioner who can order a Genova Diagnostics Complete Digestive Stool Analysis…it will be your best bet to nail down what’s really going on. Traditional gastroenterologists may not know what this test is, so a naturopathic doctor or integrative practitioner would be able to help you with this.

  16. Ryan March 19, 2013 at 5:41 pm #

Wow I had so many of the similar symptoms and doctors had no idea until I forced them to breath test me and I was right H Pylori. I became anti-social, couldn’t work because my anxiety was so bad and had constant nausea always feeling like I need to burp or puke and usually the small burps made me feel better.

I got the triple therapy and I see a naturopath normally but I just wanted this out of my system. 7-day therapy and I was massively improved but I’m still experiencing nausea, like I’ll be getting a haircut and I’m feeling like I need to burp something up or I’m gonna puke it stresses me out. When I finally stand up and move I burp and feel normal again. I’m hoping this goes away because i won’t be able to travel or fly with this nausea.

I’ve purchased Virgin Coconut Oil and Manuka 16+ and ACV. Just not sure how much to take of each? Thinking the nausea is from inflammed stomach/ulcer or who knows I just want to have my life back.

  17. sumi March 29, 2013 at 11:02 pm #

Excellent article. I am also having h pylori. I want to eradicate it naturally cos I was given a course of anti biotics. It dint work. I have just one question. Is any of the natural supplement made you nauseous?? Cos I am person who suffer from nausea cos of this h pylori. Thanks in advance. Awaiting your reply.

Thank you so much for this article! I was diagnosed with multiple strains of h. pylori via endoscopy (though I was negative in my Metametrix Complete Stool Profile, making me wary of the stool tests for it) and went on the antibiotic therapy, out of desperation to be over it, but I don’t think it worked. On day 6 and 7 of the ten day treatment (wish had been 14), I woke feeling amazing, but then days 8-10, I was back to my 20+ year normal. Don’t know what that is all about… Do you know how long after treatment you can see the antibodies in your blood again? I would like to retest. My GI doc (not integrative) wants to do the breath test (do you know anything about this?), but I don’t want to rely only on that only.

Also, have you ever heard anyone testing and possibly treating the whole family once one person has it? I heard you can catch it by kissing, and I think that I maybe had it first from college and have given it to my husband of 23 years. I am going to have him tested for the blood antibodies. My kids seem to have some symptoms as well (and respond really well to B complex vitamins, though we eat organic, grass fed and have for years, which shows me they are low). We don’t kiss our kids on the mouth, but we do drink and eat after each other a lot. I plan to have them tested next week, via blood. Any idea the accuracy of that test?

Also, I listened to this audio from Dr. Kalish (H. Pylori and other pathogens, http://www.kalishresearch.com/practitioners/products.html), who says he has a 100% effective h. pylori erradication rate, though he does not specifically list the supplements he uses (though he did mention mastic gum and licorice). He strongly suggests 60 days of a gut and adrenal healing protocol before starting treatment, conventional or natural, for good results.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 2:00 pm #

I’m sorry you’ve been battling H. Pylori for so long! It’s a tough bug to get rid of. I’m not really sure how long antibodies are present in your blood; however, I know that antibodies will stay in the blood stream for a long time, even after eradication, so it is not a reliable test to see if the H. Pylori is gone. It is, however, a great first step when you’re first diagnosed. Breath tests are a reliable and easy way to diagnose and confirm if H. Pylori is gone. I highly recommend it.
I would also suggest getting other family members tested, as they may carry the bug also. It makes sense to treat everyone at the same time. I actually haven’t read or listened to anything from Dr. Kalish but it sounds like he knows what he is doing!

I was wondering in all your research if you would know if these are safe while breastfeeding. My 2 yo is still going strong and I really don’t want to make him stop. I have the triple therapy but can’t get myself to put all these pills into body. I do all that I can to be natural. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:55 pm #

I cannot really say if they are safe during breastfeeding. I would suggest doing some research on the internet about each particular supplement to see if it would be ok to take.

  22. ka2 May 19, 2013 at 11:29 pm #

Hello and thank you so much for posting this! I so appreciate hearing other people’s stories. I just discovered my H. pylori and am treating with Pyloricil, VSL #3DS (double strength), and a few other things. I also have candida/metals and just finished treatment for Lyme. Fun, yes 🙂 Anyway, I was wondering, how long were you on Pyloricil before you started seeing results, and how long in total? I know most people get naseaus from it but that hasn’t hit me yet. It is definitely killing something but not sure it has really gotten deep in the gut yet. Just wondering about your experiences. Thanks so much.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:53 pm #

I didn’t really get nauseous while on Pyloricil either, and it was a breeze taking it throughout the few months I took it. It really wasn’t until the end of my treatment that I felt about 60% better, but after a few more months of a plant based diet and probiotics, I was just about normal in the digestive arena.

  23. Daisy May 29, 2013 at 9:05 pm #

Hey! Thankyou so much for this post, it’s really made me feel positive about battling my current bout of H. pylori. 🙂

Mine only started 5 months ago so I guess you could say I’m one of the lucky ones to have diagnosed it already. I always had a stomach of steel, could eat anything I liked without any problems… but one night on holiday in Egypt I was kept away all night in agonising pain and a high fever, battling with what felt like terrible gastroenteritis but without actually vomiting or experiencing any diarrhoea! Odd! Came back and lost half a stone in 6 weeks, diarrhoea every day, no appetite. Cut out sugar, wheat, dairy, took nausea pills – it disappeared for a month or 2.

But after a few big nights out over my birthday my obviously already weak tummy was made worse again. My symptoms this time are entirely different but, I now believe, related. This time it’s been high appetite – in fact, an INSATIABLE appetite that’s even made me cry at times. It all started with this nagging feeling of expansion and pressure in my ribcage, but that’s faded over time from use of VSL3 and cayenne capsules. Heightened anxiety and hypoglycaemia, slight weight gain, nausea every day, general aches, pains and heartburn… even shoulder and neck pains that I feel are somehow related!

I’ve been suspecting H. pylori for some time now and finally, today, it was diagnosed. I am tremendously happy about having answers at last and excited to get on with healing this baby naturally!

I have a queston – how have you been since you nuked it naturally? I’m guessing you feel a million miles better, but do you feel it’s permanently messed with you in any way? I certainly hope not. 🙂

Thanks again for this amazing, insightful post. More people out there need to be aware that with a bit of diet adjustment and patience, this battle can be won without the use of unnecessary, harsh antibiotics that mess with our natural balance.

    Bless! 🙂

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:51 pm #

Sorry for the late reply, I have been doing miles better with my digestion…hence why I haven’t kept up with the comments! Anyways, it took a few months of clean eating, lots of veggies for fiber, continuation of probiotics to finally feel regular and myself again. Keep at it, it will take time but hopefully you will get better and stay feeling better for a long time!

    Hello,

Please advise if I can take olive oil to cure h.pylori
    Together with bcomplex
Moreover did you get pain e.g epigastric pain

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:48 pm #

I have never heard of olive oil being a treatment for H. Pylori, but if it works for you, by all means keep using it!

  25. eltonwilson@gmail.com May 31, 2013 at 9:39 pm #

Just wondering if you tried to follow up by taking betaine hcl cabsules after confirming the H. Pylori is gone. I have read that H. Pylori will decrease your stomach acid level and taking HCL can bring it back up to correct levels. I had a recent issues that didn’t seem related to digestion at all but they would always occur after I ate. Taking 600 mg of hcl with every meal totally cured me (along with some Apple Cider Vinegar every once in a while).
I did test negative to H. Pylori though.

Just a suggestion if you are still dealing with digestive issues.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:47 pm #

Thanks for the suggestion. I know a lot of people deal with low stomach acid issues but after I eradicated the H. Pylori, I was able to digest normally with just enzymes. I hope everyone would try Betaine HCL to see if it is right for them after getting rid of the H. Pylori.

  26. Claire June 2, 2013 at 2:46 am #

I wanted to share too…I read your post and it mirrored a lot of what I wen through. In August 2012 I suddenly started having panic attacks. They would be so bad I would be hyperventalating. Even when they subsided, I had constant anxiety. I tried cipralex….to some extent it helped, but not much. I tried a low carb diet….again it helped, but only for a while, then I was back at square one. By now it was February and I was willing to try anything….if someone had told me drinking bleach would work I would have done it! I started to notice I had a lot of gastric related problems, then DH (a pharmacist) suggested I started to take garlic as he suspected it might be h.pylori…..I took 4 raw garlic cloves a day….in two days (LITERALLY)…..I was back to normal. After 6 months of wanting to kill myself! I am going to get an h. pylori test done tomorrow to check for the antigen….

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:46 pm #

I have heard great things about garlic and even started taking one clove a day myself as a preventative during the winter months!

  27. Denise Nassar Rice July 1, 2013 at 4:01 pm #

Thank for sharing this. I am Denise from Edible Harmony and I too was just diagnosed with H. Pylori after 3 years of battling with digestive issues.
My symptoms are more subtle but annoying… no constipation, no diarrhea, no gas, no pain, just a distended abdomen.
I gained 10 lbs in a week with no changes in my diet, but it all went to my belly and didn’t go away no matter what I did. Back then I was diagnosed with some food intolerance and my symptoms improved a little bit after I went Paleo, but they come back on a off and I thought it was due to restaurant cross contaminations. I am hoping that H Pylori is really the cause of this pregnant belly because if I get asked one more time about the status of my imaginary pregnancy I am going to cry.
My problem is that I am still breastfeeding an 18 month old and I have to take a much gentler treatment. So far I am taking DGL, goldenseal, manuka, digestive enzymes (lypo gold and bile acid factor because I am having a problem digesting fats), glutamine (intestinew) and probiotics (ultimate flora critical colon). Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:44 pm #

      Hi Denise,
Your situation is unique, especially since you cannot take very many things as you are still breastfeeding. It sounds like you are on the right track but I can’t specifically tell you what to take or what not to take as I really don’t have any experience with this type of situation. I would probably do some searches on the internet to find out which products are ok to use during this time and then if you need to, bump up to the full protocol once you are finished breastfeeding.

  28. Allie July 26, 2013 at 8:15 pm #

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I’m wondering how you took the supplements – mastic gum and the VSl#3 mention to take on an empty stomach, did you take them together? At night? In between meals?
    Thanks.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 28, 2013 at 1:41 pm #

      Hi Allie,

Sorry for the late reply…I did not take them together. I always took my VSL#3 before bed, to give the little bugs a chance before taking all the natural antimicrobials the next day. I hope you are doing better!

  29. southterra2013 August 20, 2013 at 2:02 pm #

i’M working in kill Hpylori now. I’m using a natural approach. Goldenseal , oregon grapes leaves and roots, thyme, triphala, marshmellow tea plus other teas is being great already. I’m going to start with enzymes too
I do take a high qualiy probiotc in a podwer form. The one you mention has magnesium sterate (excipient) .That is extremelly bad for your liver, it can not precessed plus do a lot of damage to your immune system. Saddly this, and steric acid is in almost everything. I never buy any supplemnt have those. Most people is getting known about this. I just talked with a nurse and a physical about it. People is leraning. Great!!.\
    h. PYLORi is being present in your gut from the very beggining of life. When there is overgrowth like as candida, things get nasty. You need some in you gut.

  30. southterra2013 August 20, 2013 at 2:30 pm #

The most research I do about the “right diet” the most I found people cure themselves with different styles. Some are vegeterians, some not. Some eat gluten free grains, some not
Dr Amy Yasko, who works with kids with autism (whose had a lot of gut problems Hpylori related) advocate for high carbs -low fat diet. She has a lot of good results with those kids.
Since, I was falling GAPS diet (high fat-low carbs) when things get bad, I can say if you suffer for gastritis, you are only make the inflamation worse with high fats. I still eat meat and a little fat but when I eat carbs is when the inflamation is gone and no pain is there.. I can feel how this soothe my gut.
If you have Hpylori overgrowth for sure you have other bacteria’s overgrowth . These is only one ingredient of this cocktail. This is why eat fruit dont sounds to me a good idea at all. Your immune system is too low, if you suffer from ulcers , acidic fruits is going to make the pain worst and if you dont have this problem, anyway you are going to feed the other patagones you have. You are healing your gut from everything is not right for a healthy balance and a healthy gut.
A delicious soup that work wonderful in gut inflamation, is Bielers soup. Woth it a try
Chinese Medicine. it will said all stomach problems are related to spleen. Spleen likes warm food and food as pumpkim, brown rice, oats, jobs tears, yams, pumkim seeds and avoid “cold” veggies as cucumber, lettuce and rest and relax.
I know my problem was created for low HCL .That happen when you take a lot of antiflamatory Western drugs plus an unhealthy diet. I know I’m not in no one of those categories but other reason can be oxidative stress….. and there I have the first place 😦

  31. Don September 5, 2013 at 1:22 pm #

Did you take or try magnesium as I have read good things about it for helping with acid reflux, anxiety.. etc..

    • Grain Free and Fabulous September 25, 2013 at 5:10 pm #

I do take magnesium daily along with a multi-vitamin. It is fantastic for stress!

  32. Deanna H. September 21, 2013 at 9:34 pm #

I too have H Pylori. This is my second time and treatment. I am so nauseous, tired and bloated and yes a weight gain. When I would have these symptoms I would eat and it felt better for a while. I did not know sugar was a culprit, I have a craving for sweets, so will definitely curb that. I am hoping the antibiotics work because they are awful to take, but much better than feeling sick all the time. Thanks for the article. I am enlightened.

I appreciate the information that is written here and i am trying my best to keep to this diet, is it enough to be on 2 or 3 supplements, or i need to be on all of these supplements to get h pylory eradicated? also if i take high on anti oxidants food and water can that eradicate the bacteria?

      • Grain Free and Fabulous February 2, 2014 at 11:32 pm #

I used all the supplements based on my own research and certainly it is up to you if you want to take some or all of them. I definitely recommend the mastic, monolaurin, and probiotics and certainly the others but again, I don’t know what your outcomes would be if you choose a condensed version but it’s always worth a try!

  33. Jill Skibba October 21, 2013 at 6:43 pm #

Hi there. I’m late to this post, but hope that you will still get this reply. I was diagnosed just over a year ago with Lyme Disease after 19 years of struggle. Due to the Lyme, I have also incurred 5 additional co existing infections, one being H Pylori. Your description of the shaking and anxiety and not being able to take Probiotics was like reading my own bio. I am currently seeing a Specialist for the Lyme and we have made great strides, (brain fog, fatigue, Bell’s Palsy, numbness etc…) but this H Pylori is kicking my ass! Over a year of antibiotics and I still haven’t kicked it. I have to take some of the blame for my addiction to sugar is unparalleled. I assume part of the addiction is due to so much bacteria craving it. I have recently gone back to a bare bones diet and plan on taking some time off all meds and give your way a try. I would love to speak with you about your experience. I’ve never talked to any doctor Eastern or Western or any other sufferer who had the same experiences as me. Thanks in advance, Jill

    • Grain Free and Fabulous February 2, 2014 at 11:25 pm #

Hi and thank you for your comments – I apologize for the late reply. I too have suffered with many infections and it certainly takes a toll on your health. I’ve come to believe that no one ever truly recovers unless their gut health is improved. I recommend you seek out a naturopathic doctor (ND) or an integrative physician who is aware of how to treat and heal the gut. It is a long process and diet is huge in recovery. I suggest you take a look at natural healing Lyme Disease books such as Steven Buhners book and there are several Lyme cookbooks too – you can find several on Amazon. I wish you well in your recovery!

  34. Laurel Holmes October 25, 2013 at 1:46 pm #

HI there, your leg work and protocols look great. I had H Pylori 5 years ago and took antibiotics/proton pump inhibitors for a month. It was gone! But I’m sure it returned long ago. I’ve had chronic constipation/IBS and bad acne. Also cycling into low energy times. Im 50 and fit, and decided to see if I had H pylori again…yep. So I’ve done tons of research for natural remedies that not only kill the bacteria, but heal the stomach/ulcer, and create ongoing regime for maintaining gut health. Your protocols looks great. I am also adding Gastrazyme, a mineral bath, and chelation daily. Thank you so much for your awesome research and help! Laurel, Bellingham

    • Henrique Kikuchi February 12, 2014 at 6:02 pm #

      Hello Laurel Holmes,
I also was diagnosed with H Pylori, and did all the treatment prescribed by the doctor. I’m done with the medicines for 1 month, but my stomach and the lower right side of my belly burn every day all the time. I think it is the ulcer Im trying to heal. Would you help me sharing you treatment and detailed diet to cure your ulcer?
Thank you very much in advance.
      Best regards
      Henrique Kikuchi.

      • Grain Free and Fabulous March 19, 2014 at 7:27 pm #

        Hi Henrique,

Thank you for reading this post and I hope it helps you! I never had an ulcer (or at least that I was aware of) so I can’t really recommend anything for that, other than aloe vera juice ( not the stuff you put on sunburns!), maybe some DGL licorice, and probiotics. I hope you feel better soon!!

  35. Engrid October 29, 2013 at 11:25 am #

Right now, I’m taking two antibiotics (prescibed by the doctor) and omeprazole, and I’m also taking a supplementary blend of lactoferrin and probiotic. I’d like to add mastic gum to the equation, but I don’t want to take too much at one time. However, it seems as if there’s no such thing as “too much.”

I found out about my h. pylori via an urgent care physician, and I had been having severe symptoms for approximately two months. Prior to my knowledge of the infection, my diet was full of all the wrong things and contained none of the right things. However, I am now trying to make adjustments (although it’s hard to change taste buds and curb cravings for foods that you were raised on). But I’m trying.

I hope I am well soon, and I hope anyone else suffering is well by now. The dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and (permanent, it seems) bloating has resulted in me being almost completely disengaged from lots of things–misery will do that to you, I suppose.

I am also confused about the diet I should follow, as some of the things listed by some reputable sources as “beneficial” are on the “banned” list by some other sources. I guess that’s the beauty of having so much information at your fingertips. bah humbug.

    😀

  36. Madhu December 1, 2013 at 10:13 pm #

I am from India. I did not know that I had h pylori until one night I felt symptoms in the stomach. I was scared thinking it might be cancer. But the Gerd told its h pylori and erosive gastritis which is very common.

I decided to go with Ayurvedic treatment due to some friends suggestions. I am feeling better now. I had constant temperature before but now its not that much. I still have to handle the stomach as I still feel the gnawing or pricking sensation. But the doctor as told me not to worry as it will take a few months.

I am glad I did not use antibiotic medicines as that would have not addressed the real problems. I suggest everyone to try integrated ayurvedic treatment for no side effects and permanent solution.

I have a question for you, I have been suffering from h pylory for 3 years now I took 2 sets of anitbiotics and it didn’t work, your article has been soooooo helpful to me, im just a little confused am I supposed to take all these supplements or 1 supplement would be enough like oregano oil? broccoli sprouts article dosent say how many tablets and mg im supposed to take, how do I figure it out?

    • Grain Free and Fabulous February 2, 2014 at 11:35 pm #

I used all the supplements to rid myself of H. Pylori but I have read of a few people who claimed to get rid of theirs with just mastic gum, so if you only want to take one thing, you could try mastic or oregano oil and see what happens. As for the broccoli sprouts, just follow the recommendation on the back of the bottle you choose to buy – most recommend one capsule a day.

        Hello
I am being tested for h pylori today.going to do the stool test. Reading your symptoms I truly feel that I have it. Its been about 2 wks that I started feeling nauseated, tired, weak, excessive gas, stomach pain, anxious, trouble breathing do to pressure, lighheaded, lost of appetite.just not feeling myself. Its the first time im being tested for h.pylori but I feel like ive had it for a while becauese i remember i started having anxiety few yrs ago and had stomach problems and complained to the dr she told me that my stomach problems was caused by my anxiety and maybe from the anxiety pills side effects. I remember not being able to stick to any anxiety pills because it just made my symptoms worse . If I do have hpylori I will be mad because I know I had it for a long time and dr didnt hear me out amd because ive been dealing with stomach pain for a while. But happy Because I finally know whats wrong and could now do something about it. 😉 thanks for sharing !

Your post seems like it has a lot of helpful info in it. I have learned a lot. I started experiencing stomach pain, including abdominal burning and nausea back in August, but it took three doctors and several months before they discovered it was h. pylori. Since then I have been on the quadruple antibiotic treatment and many alternative things and nothing has gotten rid of it. The mastic made the pain bearable, but after two months on it, I decided to try some other things. I am now on a special diet and have been taking turmeric, but that doesn’t seem to be working either. I was glad to find some of your recommendations as I am ready to be rid of this. I am just curious as to how you took all of those things each day…Did you go by a specific regimin?

      H. Pylori sucks doesn’t it! Anyways, I gathered all my supplements up and read the back of the bottle to know if they were to be taken with food or without and then how many supplements were to be taken daily (I listed a few of the serving amounts on this post) and the others you can find on the back of the bottles. Then I made a list with what to take before breakfast, during, or after and so on with lunch and dinner as well. It made sure I wasn’t taking everything in the morning but spreading it all out throughout the day. It was quite a few supplements but I haven’t had a problem since with it, so it certainly was worth the annoyance for a few months.

I’ll tell you that I learned TONS from my own research and from grainfreeandfabulous and healed HPylori symptoms! I wrote how I did it on my blog reality sandwiches/laurelholmes~come take a look. Mostly 2 mastic gum and 2 monolaurin in mornings and then at night before bed for 60 days. I kicked the first 10 days off with another medicine that IMMEDIATELY brought the stomach symptoms down called “gastrazyme” by Biotics. Its $17/bottle and I took 2 in morning and 2 at night= powerful stomach healer.

Thanks for the info. I was also wondering what kinds of fruits you would recommend? I have been eating fruits, but then I read some articles that said you shouldn’t eat fruits while you are trying to get rid of h. pylori due to all the sugar in them. Could you also tell me if you remember about how long it was before you began to feel better? I know you said it was months before it was gone, but was there a distinct point when you knew you were getting better? I have been doing these things for a couple of weeks now, and know that it will take a while (I still feel about the same right now), but I am going on vacation in a couple of months and am really hoping this will be mostly gone so I can actually enjoy it. Thanks again!

As far as fruits, I would stick to berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries etc.) since they are the lowest in terms of fructose. However, adding an apple in your diet ever day is good too, as the fiber promotes good digestion. I actually began to feel better several months after treatment, as you have to remember there is a lot of damage that H. Pylori causes and that takes time to heal. Keep up with your probiotics and eat well and healing will take place. If you have further problems, I recommend finding a practitioner who can test you for ‘leaky gut’ cause that can cause a whole host of issues as well. Good luck and know it does get better!!

I’m so grateful to read this! I am currently taking mastic gum and oregano oil. I’m literally at my wits end with this illness. I’m 18 years old and I cannot do the normal things and young girl does. I’m constantly filled with anxiety, like extreme, and I just all around never feel good. I pray and pray and pray. I’m going to continue trying all these things and the diet as well. Again, I greatly appreciate this. Thanks for the hope!

Thank you for your post, I felt like was reading my own story, right down to the trip to the hospital for panic attacks and the meds they gave me to treat them that ultimately made me feel even worse. Your post finally put things into place for me, I have colitis and this has been up there will horrible experiences at least with colitis I don’t feel like i’m going nuts… I am just waiting for my test results to come back but i am 100% that this little parasite is what is ruining my life a the moment, thank god my doctor thought to test me for this. I have started taking probiotics, oregano oil and I am going to also start taking mastic gum. Once the results come back I do want to take one round of antibiotics as well as continue taking the three supplants I have already started taking, would you know if I would be able to still take the three supplements as well as the antibiotics??

    • Grain Free and Fabulous May 29, 2014 at 8:23 pm #

I am not a doctor so I can’t really give medical advice as to whether the supplements would be ok to take along with antibiotics but if you feel like it would be good to take together, you could always ask your doctor or try it and see if it works. The one thing I would be concerned about is whether the herbs would lower the effectiveness of the antibiotics.

Fellow HP sufferer here, 23 years of no diagnosis and wasted scans and drugs.
Then had a stool test which found HP, tried antibiotics in December and had one glorious month before re-infected. Giving Mastic Gum a go now with just a pinch of sodium bicarbonate to raise the PH levels which is supposed to tempt the little chaps out of hiding so we can zap em.

Just following up on this. I had a second batch of antibiotics that did the trick back in March after another positive HP stool test. My doc told me I was clear of the infection but I still felt bad. I self diognosed SIBO and I started taking control more of my diet and cut out as many sugar based things and Started on Lactose free milk. There are lots of SIBO diets available online. After a couple of months the bloating I’d had for over 20 years cleared up but I was still getting a (and it’s hard to describe unless you’ve had it) brain fog. I was told you get a bacteria die off effect which I put this down to. In December I started taking a small scoop of lauricidin (same as monolaurin) once a day with my main meal. I have to say the last 3 months have been amazing. No more brain fog, no bloating, no waking in the night with stomach pains an not sleeping. More energy, feel like I’ve gone back to being in my 20s again. I’ve even started drinking beer again, not a good thing I know but as my wise old mother keeps saying. “Everything in moderation” and ” What works for one person doesn’t always work for all” 2 great sayings which have helped my battle against HP and the hundreds of miracle cures on the market. Hope your battle is won for you

Hi all, just had to follow up on my previous comments. As I said before, my last test for HP says I’m free of it after my second course of antibiotics. However I still get periods where I bad a year and a half later, I’ve tried virtually every tablet/herb/diet out there, some have short term relief, but I’ve stopped using them all now. Including monolaurin. After much research, I seem to have found my natural cure and it’s free. When I feel bad I think of it as the bad bacteria have sneaked up my system into my upper digestive where it shouldn’t be. My mission is to flush them back down into the stomach where they should live. It’s all about a downward motion. Normally it takes 2 days to sort out simply by following a simple diet.
MY DIET: for breakfast I liquidise a couple of carrots, celery, cabbage and add a quality probiotic taken out of the capsual and sprinkled in. There’s lots for sale, the best ones are the ones with more strains which tend to be more expensive. It all depends on your budget. I use Bio-kult from protexin, but there are more stains emerging all the time. The healing power of cabbage is quite amazing, but I have to say raw cabbage isn’t that tasty. So experiment with the amounts and what you add. I’ve often been out of cabbage and used broccoli or sprouts/ parsnip instead. Whatever works for you. The aim is to create a food that slips down easily taking the bacteria with it. I create about a pint of the stuff. Have half for breakfast and sip the rest through the day. Having a normal evening meal. Any gastritis or stomach bloating I have is gone the next day. It’s worth saying I found out my trigger foods which bring on the stomach issues, pastry and excessive animal fats like pork belly, so I try to avoid them. However everyone’s different. Good luck with your issues, hope my methods work for you!!

This is very good information. My fiance has been having all of the exact same symptoms that you described. He was diagnosed with H Pylori last Summer. He has taken 2 rounds of antibiotics. (The 1st round didn’t treat it.) He’s still been feeling terrible including having the brain fog and anxiety attacks. He found out yesterday that he has H. Pylori again for the 3rd time. We’re definitely going to try some of these methods you mentioned. His Dr wants him to take antibiotics again for 28 days this time.

Hello I just had my daughter the end of march and for a month I was doing great one day I ate some food that didn’t sit well I began feeling a horrible sensation of heartburn that caused shortness of breath. I had to go to the hospital several times for the same issues and was told several different things. I finally went to my Dr who thank goodness decided to test me for h pylori which came back positive. I have had shortness of breathe, panic attack like symptoms, loss of appetite, weight loss and crave sugar all the time. It’s so hard to deal with especially having to work. I was but on the triple treatment and has helped a bit. I’m just frustrated with the symptoms and want to be here for my baby. I’m hoping this treatment works if not I will have to try some of the things listed. Where did you buy most of the supplements?

      • Grain Free and Fabulous August 26, 2014 at 11:53 am #

I apologize for the late reply, I only check back so often since this article is a few years old. I got all my supplements online – there are several sites that you can order from.

  45. AJ June 19, 2014 at 8:21 am #

Hi! Im from Manila, Philippines. I accidentally stumbled upon your site . Im currently searching for answers regarding my condition and Im looking at H. Pylori as a possible cause. But based on my symptoms Im not tallying with H. Pylori symptoms but Im just trying to see if its possible. I thought of asking for your advice.

Im currently having bad chronic dizziness. It started late last year around October where Id get sporadic dizziness which lasted for a few seconds. It was an on and off thing and I dismissed it attributing it to anxiety (to which ill explain more in the following paragraphs) Last Jan 2014 while working at home facing the laptop I suddenly had a burst of vertigo like dizziness . The dizziness went away (took Rviotril-clonazepam to calm myself) as I fell asleep to the effect of the medication. The next day, however, things were different. The days that followed, I was having constant dizziness 24/7 . There was a falling/sinking to the ground feeling and a rocking sensation like Im in a boat type of dizziness. This dizzness has persisted until now. I used to be able to work on the computer and manage the dizziness but over the course of months the dizziness started getting worse. Now I cant sit straight on the table and I have to recline on a sofa or bed to use the computer. Now okay you might ask what has this got to do with h pylori or your blog?

I cant really recall what started first but I always get migraines and stomach problems. Stomach problems from simple pain in the tummy either from high acidity. Then I started getting acid reflux where I had to put two pillows when I in order to avoid the nasty acid taste in the mouth. During that time I started taking antacids like Zantac . My tummy took in for the worse back in 2011 bec my acididty was going up. Back then I wasnt conscious about my diet and still stuck to acid forming foods. I was prescribed with proton pump inhibitors and antacids. Eventually my stomach settled in 2012 but I didnt know it would lead to a new illness

By the end of 2012 I had my first major anxiety/panic attack which was triggered by my first vestibular migraine attack. I thought I was going to die from that incident . I went to see a psychiatrist (out of desperation) and was eventually prescirbed to taking anti anxiety medication (Rivotril-clonazepam) and anti depression (zescita-escitalopram). I was doubting myself why I had suddenly an anxiety attack because I was a happy person back then.

Fast track today I still feel anxious and Im still tkaing my medication for anxiety and depression to control the dizziness but it doesnt really do it. A neurologist last Jan 2014 diagnosed me with vestibular migraine but I think it has another cause and Im thinking a gastrointestinal one.

Im not sure if im dealing with h.pylori because I havent had tests done but I believe that my migraines, and anxiety and depression and possibly my chronic dizziness/vestibular migriane is caused by an infection in my gatrointestistinal tract.

I dont know if I have h.pylori or candidiasis but Im trying to find an answer.

What tests should i do to check for h.pylori? Im scared of getting an endoscopy but I want to take the same tests as you did just to verify. Candidiasis is difficult to test bec it doesnt appear accurately on stool, urine or blood tests. Presence of Candida is diagnosed based on symptoms .

How are you doing now by the way? Id love to hear from you

and if I may add the reason Im messaging you is I want to take a natural course of healing as well and I dont want to rely on antibiotics. Plus I want to stop my anti anxiety medication already because its habit forming 😦

      AJ,
I apologize for the late reply, I usually check up on the article every few months as it is nearing a few years old but thought I would answer your question about how I’m doing – good! H. Pylori has yet to return but I am still tackling leaky gut, which is in of itself another beast 🙂 I wish you the best of luck on your healing journey!

  46. Tanya June 22, 2014 at 1:13 pm #

L-glutamine might not be a good recommendation, it is a source of glutamate which Dr. Yasko says is an excitotoxin, it could throw off your GABA/glutamate balance.

Thanks for sharing. I am going to try your regimen, but would like to know the frequency you took the pills each day and the dosages. Currently looking online for all supplements. I have had all but 2 of your symptoms. I was diagnosed with h.pylori last year and given the antibiotics and acid reducer. Felt great while on it, but unfortunately it came back. Thanks again! God bless!

    • Grain Free and Fabulous August 26, 2014 at 11:51 am #

Unless I stated otherwise in the article, I just followed the dosage guidelines on the bottle. Wishing you a speedy healing!

  48. Annmarie September 16, 2014 at 8:36 am #

Hi there. I’ve started on Monolaurin and Broccoli Sprouts. I saw that your post says you took 2 caps of the Mono 2x/day. Do you know what the dosage was per capsule? The product I have is 1,100 mg per 2 caps. Just curious, did you take these supplements all together? Thanks for any help!

    • Grain Free and Fabulous February 20, 2015 at 8:57 pm #

Sorry this reply is so late, I rarely check this blog but keep it up because I know it helps quite a few people. The dosage I took was 300 mg per 1 capsule, so I only took 600 mg per day. My guess is that you have the 600 mg capsules – if they are working for you, you could certainly keep the dosage or drop down to one a day.

    Hello there,

I want to thank you for sharing this article online and I hope you never take it off because it changed my life since I started your diet and using the supplements you suggested.

I wasn’t able to use three of the suggested supplements but I followed the diet to a T and used all of the other supplements.

When I started your program I had been struggling with H.Pylory for one year and a half and had already gone through two rounds of antibiotics. I had chronic diarrhea and had lost a lot of weight.
I started using the supplements and following the diet three months ago and stopped eleven days ago when my children came home for the holidays.
I am happy to report I have had no H.Pylory symptoms since about two months ago and now that I have stopped them completely, the wellbeing continues. Now the holidays are over I look forward to being tested again and hopefully I will be H.Pylory Free as well!

I want to thank you for sharing this valuable website and for sharing your story because to me, Kaiser didn’t save me, your protocol did. Thank you!
    Claudia

I am at my wits end. I tested negative for sibo and h pylori but I have every single symptom plus MTHFR, leaky gut and unrelenting weight gain..I don’t even want to eat…I have been paleo for four years and now cannot eat much of anything meat or starchy veg without bloat. I took rifaximin and vsl #3after but I feel even worse with more weight gain. I’m sorry to be negative but I am tired of this and I have cried myself to sleep this past week every night and have lost all my zest.

    • Grain Free and Fabulous July 12, 2015 at 10:25 pm #

I’m sorry to hear of your tummy troubles Jen. Have you been tested for Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance? If you have symptoms of MTHFR, please get tested…do not assume you have anything without proper testing. Also, I suggest you get tested for parasites or any other infection that might be causing you trouble. Please seek out a qualified practitioner who can help you!

        Hi.

I do have two confirmed mthfr issues which are not easy to navigate to heal w all the conflicting advice. I guess at this point I don’t feel like eating BC no matter what… I’m still gaining weight which baffles me. I am debating just using powdered gelatin and smoothies for now with veggies as fruits are too sweet for me at this time. Bone broth irritates me for some reason….

      • Grain Free and Fabulous September 19, 2015 at 11:52 am #

It sounds like diet isn’t the issue causing your weight gain…this could stem from a variety of metabolic issues, including thyroid trouble, diabetes etc. etc. This reply is late but I definitely think you have more going on than just gut issues…and my hope is that you found a doctor willing to investigate.
